Modem Hijacking / Trojan Progam Advice
We would like to bring to the attention all our online customers the possibility of being subjected to a global internet problem which may result in your modem connection being redirected to an international number which will result in higher telephone charges.

We would ask all of our internet customers to be vigilant and ensure that any prompts they may receive while browsing are carefully examined as they may contain very small print stating that access to the intended site may result in an international/premium rate number being redialled.

It has also been noted that in some cases no notification is given to the user and once the site is accessed the international number is downloaded to your modem automatically and for each minute thereafter you may be charged an international call rate which could be in extreme cases be anything up to 5 euro per minute. These 'Trojan programs' are self-executing files can only be installed with the users agreement. But most often the user doesn't realise they installed the new dialler settings.

Some programs could result in the following:

  • May be programmed to never time-out
  • May be programed to re-dial the foriegn ISP in the background

Whilst Esat BT will do everything in its power to protect its customers from such occurrences, ie restricting access to such numbers when they are made apparent, we would offer the following guidelines when connect to the internet:

  • Be vigilant at all times for signs of redirecting on certain sites
  • Regular updating of your dialler and browser with IOL, or Oceanfree.net
  • Monitor phone bills - report charges to your (old) ISP and they can re-connect you
  • Read the small print before you enter any site you are unsure about
  • Listen out for modem redialling & be wary of auto-connect options in your browser settings - Preferably click a 'connect', or 'accept' button in your dialler, before connecting
  • Check the dial up number on your connection each time you revisit the internet
  • Ensure you select a reasonable 'inactive' time-out period in your dialler settings - E.g. 15 minutes
  • Check all CDs in magazines and new PCs to ensure they are local operators. Even Microsoft and AOL can be responsible for distribution of international diallers.
