How do I get an e-mail address?
On the oceanfree.net help you will see an icon to register for e-mail - just follow the
prompts.
What e-mail do I get?
oceanfree.net provides you with free unlimited e-mail addresses.
What is POP3 and SMTP?
Post Office Protocol version 3 (known as PO3) is the protocol used to allow your messages
to be stored on the remote POP3 e-mail server and be collected by an e-mail program such
as Microsoft Outlook Express. Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is the protocol used by
Outlook Express to send e-mails to the oceanfree SMTP e-mail server, which in turn
transfers the mail to the destination user's POP3 mailbox.
Do I get POP3 or Web based e-mail from oceanfree?
Your oceanfree account supports both POP3 and web based e-mail.
What do those error messages in POP3/SMTP mean?
A great many customers are using Outlook Express to send and receive email with no
difficulty. However, we have received some enquiries from customers regarding an error
they experience when trying to send email using our POP3/SMTP service (Outlook Express).
These customers should read Technical Bulletin No.1.
Can I use both POP3 and Web based e-mail at the same time?
Web based e-mail allows you to read/create e-mail from almost any computer that is
connected to the Internet and that has a web browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer.
It is ideal where you have a small amount of e-mail to send/receive or wish to use
different computers to access the Internet (e.g. at home and at work). POP3 e-mail is
ideal when you always use the same computer to access the Internet and you often have a
number of e-mails to send/receive. With web based e-mail you have to be connected to the
Internet, whilst with POP3 e-mail you can create and read your e-mail offline, and only
connect to the Internet for a short period whilst you send/receive. More advanced users
could use a mixture of both, for example having a quick read of their e-mail at work using
web based e-mail, and using POP3 e-mail to deal with all of their e-mail at home.
What is Microsoft Outlook Express?
Outlook Express is a free mail and news reader which is bundled with Microsoft Internet
Explorer. To use POP3 e-mail you will require a copy of this software, if you don't
currently have it, it is available from the oceanfree.net CD-ROM or from http://www.microsoft.com.
Setting up Outlook Express
This is covered in a separate step-by-step guide
Will Outlook Express slow down my PC?
Outlook Express on its own will not slow down your PC. You may notice that your PC is busy
if you have a number of e-mails to send or receive, or if you are sending or receiving an
e-mail with a large attachment such as a document or program.
