2. How
do I get started?
How
do I get oceanfree software?
You can collect a free oceanfree.net CD-ROM from:
- Your
local ESB Shop
- Any
Texaco service station
Alternatively,
if you are using an existing Internet Service Provider (ISP), you
can download a free copy of the software
on the oceanfree.net site.
At
what speed will I connect to the Internet?
Connection speeds are measured in kilobits per second (kbit/s).
Depending on your telephone line and hardware, you can connect at
speeds between 14.4 kbit/s and 64 kbit/s. If you have a normal telephone
line (i.e. an analogue line), the fastest modems offered can run
at up to 56 kbit/s.
What
should I do if I cannot connect to oceanfree.net?
One of the most common reasons for someone having difficulty with
installation or connection is that their telephone is not forwarding
Calling Line Identification (CLI). The majority of customers in
Ireland using eircom telephone lines will present CLI, except those
that have requested to be ex-directory and in this instance CLI
is suppressed. Please contact your phone service provider to have
the CLI suppression lifted permanently. If this advice does not
help you to connect and none of the other Frequently Asked Questions
provide the answer you are looking for, you can call our Technical
Helpdesk on 1550 932 555. Calls are charged at IR58p per minute.
The lines are open 7 days a week from 8am until 12 midnight. The
Technical Helpdesk will help you get connected to oceanfree.net
if you are experiencing difficulties, but will not be able to help
you with other Internet-related queries.
What
is CLI and why is it necessary?
CLI stands for "Calling Line Identification" and it is
this facility which allows network equipment to identify authorised
users. oceanfree.net uses CLI to create an audit trail of calls
to the service as a security measure. All eircom phone lines send
CLI unless a request has been made to withhold this information.
If you have requested eircom to provide a permanent "number
withhold" option then oceanfree.net will not work from your
phone line unless you request this facility to be removed. You should
contact eircom for advice.
I
have 'number withhold' as an option on my phone line - can I still
use oceanfree.net?
Yes, you can solve this problem in a couple of ways. You can remove
the facility on a permanent basis, by calling your telephone supplier.
Otherwise, you can manually update your oceanfree.net software to
remove the facility on a "per call" basis.
- Go
to your desktop startup screen and double click on the 'My Computer'
icon
- Double
click on "Dial-up Networking" (If the "Make New
Connection" window comes up then simply press "Cancel").
- Double
click on the oceanfree icon. A "Connect to" box will
be displayed.
- Single
click on the "Dial Properties" button and a new window
called "Dialing Properties" will be displayed.
- Go
to the "How do I dial from this location" field. Insert
"142,," into the "To access an outside line, first
dial" box (note that you must include the two commas).
- Repeat
this information in the "for long distance" box.
- The
number displayed should now read "142,, ******".
- Click
on the "OK" button.
- Press
"Cancel" buttons until you have returned to your desktop
startup screen.
- Click
on the oceanfree icon and you should now be able to access oceanfree.net
What
is the dial in number for oceanfree.net?
The dial in number for oceanfree.net is dependent on where you are
calling from. Once you have loaded the software, select where you
are calling from and this will then automatically generate an icon
for dialling.
Can
I use oceanfree.net from overseas or Northern Ireland?
No - you can only access oceanfree.net from the Republic of Ireland.
What
do I do if I download the software and I'm having trouble?

where you cannot find the answers amongst these frequently asked
questions. The number is 1550 923 555. Calls are charged at IR58p
