to allow your messages to be stored on the remote POP3 e-mail server
and be collected by an e-mail program such as Microsoft Outlook
Express. Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is the protocol used

Can
I use both POP3 and Web based e-mail at the same time?
Web based e-mail allows you to read/create e-mail from almost any
computer that is connected to the Internet and that has a web browser
such as Microsoft Internet Explorer. It is ideal where you have
a small amount of e-mail to send/receive or wish to use different
computers to access the Internet (e.g. at home and at work). POP3
e-mail is ideal when you always use the same computer to access
the Internet and you often have a number of e-mails to send/receive.
With web based e-mail you have to be connected to the Internet,
whilst with POP3 e-mail you can create and read your e-mail offline,
and only connect to the Internet for a short period whilst you send/receive.
More advanced users could use a mixture of both, for example having
a quick read of their e-mail at work using web based e-mail, and
using POP3 e-mail to deal with all of their e-mail at home.
What
is Microsoft Outlook Express?
Outlook Express is a free mail and news reader which is bundled
with Microsoft Internet Explorer. To use POP3 e-mail you will require
a copy of this software, if you don't currently have it, it is available

Will
Outlook Express slow down my PC?
Outlook Express on its own will not slow down your PC. You may notice

receive, or if you are sending or receiving an e-mail with a large
attachment such as a document or program.
